NEW DELHI - 15th December 2024 -Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the settlement of illegal Rohingya refugees in Delhi by the BJP-led Central Government. In her letter, CM Atishi urged the Central Government not to settle any illegal refugees in Delhi without the permission of the Delhi Government and its citizens. She demanded that the Central Government provide a complete list of Rohingya refugees settled in Delhi along with their addresses to the Delhi Government, LG, and Delhi Police.
She stated that the BJP-led Central Government settled Rohingya refugees in Delhi, taking away flats meant for Delhiites. Referring to a tweet by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on August 17, 2022, CM Atishi said, “The minister clearly stated that Rohingya refugees will be housed in EWS flats in Bakkarwala and will be provided basic amenities, UNHCR IDs, and 24/7 security by Delhi Police. This demonstrates that settling Rohingya refugees in Bakkarwala was a deliberate decision of the BJP-led Central Government.”
Addressing a press conference on Sunday, CM Atishi remarked, “Union Home Minister Amit Shah is responsible for law and order in Delhi, for the country’s borders, and for ensuring security across the nation. I have sent him a letter addressing the serious issue of illegal settlement of Rohingya refugees in Delhi. The BJP-led Central Government has settled illegal immigrants in EWS flats meant for the poor of Delhi. This is a gross violation of the rights of Delhi’s residents.”
Atishi raised critical questions: “How did these illegal Rohingya immigrants cross the Bangladesh border and pass through states like West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh to reach Delhi? Delhi is not near any border. Securing borders and preventing the movement of illegal immigrants between states is solely the responsibility of the BJP-led Central Government and Amit Shah, who have utterly failed in this responsibility.”
She further speculated, “Was this a deliberate attempt to settle illegal immigrants in Delhi under the BJP’s refugee policy? Is this a well-thought-out strategy of the BJP? As the Chief Minister of Delhi, I have four questions for Amit Shah:
1. Were these illegal Rohingya refugees deliberately brought from the border to different parts of the country, including Delhi?
2. How many such Rohingya refugees have been settled in Delhi?
3. Where exactly have they been settled in Delhi?
4. Why were the elected Delhi Government and the people of Delhi kept in the dark about this settlement process?”
