First Meeting of Water Supply & Sewerage Disposal Committee Held
Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla Entrusts Smt. Sarbjit Kaur with Ensuring Efficient Water Management
Chandigarh, February, 28 :- The first meeting of the recently formed Water Supply & Sewerage Disposal Committee of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh was held today under the leadership of Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla. The Mayor has entrusted Smt. Sarbjit Kaur with the responsibility of ensuring smooth water distribution and sewerage management across the city.
During the meeting, two key agendas were discussed—an increase in sewerage cess and the provision of temporary water connections outside Lal Dora areas. Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Chairperson of the Committee, proposed that sewerage cess be increased by 2% every year to ensure sustainable infrastructure maintenance. However, Councillor Smt. Prem Lata raised objections to this proposal, expressing concerns over its impact on residents.
The committee also approved the agenda to allot 2,563 temporary water connections to residents of Lal Dora and Phirni areas in the erstwhile 22 villages. This decision is expected to generate an annual revenue of ₹3 crore for the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh. However, these temporary water connections will be subject to the following conditions:
1. The water connection provided will be purely temporary.
2. The consumer shall not have any ownership rights or claims to the connection, and no permanent entitlement will arise from it.
3. In case a demolition drive is carried out as per the directions of the Chandigarh Administration or any Court of India, the temporary water connection will be disconnected.
4. The Municipal Corporation will not be held responsible for any damages or issues caused to the connection due to such disconnection or the demolition process.
Mayor Smt. Harpreet Kaur Babla emphasized the importance of strengthening water supply infrastructure and improving sanitation facilities for the city’s residents. "Water management and sanitation are crucial for Chandigarh’s development. With Smt. Sarbjit Kaur leading this committee, I am confident that we will achieve significant progress in these areas," she stated.
Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Chairperson of the Committee, assured that the committee will work diligently to enhance water supply, streamline sewerage disposal, and ensure better sanitation facilities across the city.
The committee members present at the meeting included Sh. Gurcharanjit Singh, Sh. Kanwarjeet Singh, Sh. Kuljeet Singh Sandhu, Sh. Saurabh Joshi, Smt. Prem Lata, Sh. Jasbir Singh, Smt. Darshana and Sh. Satinder Singh Sidhu.
