Chandigarh, March 25, 2026:In a significant step towards ensuring accessible and equitable healthcare services, and with the approval of the Administrator, UT Chandigarh, Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria, the Health Department, Chandigarh Administration, has issued directions for the strict implementation of provisions under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016. Particular emphasis has been laid on Section 25 of the Act, which mandates priority in attendance and treatment for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
These measures will be implemented across major government healthcare institutions, including Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH-32), Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH-16), and all AYUSH dispensaries in Chandigarh.
To ensure effective implementation, healthcare facilities have been directed to adopt the following measures:
* Establish dedicated priority counters, fast-track lanes, and separate registration tokens/slots for PwDs at all service points, including registration, OPD/IPD consultations, diagnostic services, pharmacy, billing, and emergency care.
* Sensitize and train frontline staff, including receptionists, nurses, security personnel, pharmacists, and doctors, regarding the provisions of the RPwD Act and accessibility guidelines to ensure prompt and respectful service to PwDs without delay.
* Display prominent signage, posters, and digital notices at key locations, including entrances, waiting areas, service counters, and online appointment systems, to inform and assist PwDs.
* Ensure regular monitoring of implementation through internal audits, patient feedback mechanisms, and timely redressal of complaints related to non-compliance.
This initiative reflects the commitment of the Chandigarh Administration towards building an inclusive healthcare system that is responsive to the needs of all citizens, especially Persons with Disabilities, ensuring dignity, accessibility, and equality in healthcare delivery.
