Jalandhar, September 28-“My two sons died because of drugs. My wife has also passed away, and I have lost my eyesight. There is no one left for me—no one to look after me. I spend my nights at a gurdwara. I do not know who will light my funeral pyre when I die.”

Recounting his ordeal, Ramesh, a resident of Bilga in Jalandhar district, broke down while speaking about the devastation caused by drugs in his family.

His was among several deeply distressing accounts shared by families affected by drug abuse in Jalandhar.

For many of them, the tragedy has gone far beyond addiction: it has claimed lives, broken families, wiped out savings and left parents struggling to rebuild their lives.

A woman from Tilak Nagar said she had lost both her sons to drugs. “Both my sons died because of drugs. After one of them died, his wife and child left the house. The other had two wives and two children, and they too left. Whatever we had was eventually lost. Drugs are available in almost every neighbourhood in Tilak Nagar. We feel helpless,” she said.

Ramesh and the woman from Tilak Nagar were among more than a dozen people who spoke about how drug abuse had devastated their families.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has been undertaking four Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatras since September 18. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to address a public gathering in Jalandhar on September 30 to mark the culmination of the yatras. During the campaign, the Punjab BJP has also been highlighting the experiences of families affected by drugs.

After listening to the affected families, Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon said their experiences reflected the ground-level reality of the drug problem in Punjab.

Taking aim at the state government’s handling of the issue, Dhillon said, “The government’s policy has become one of beating people and not even allowing them to cry.” He alleged that instead of taking effective steps to curb drugs, attempts were being made to silence those raising their voices against the menace.

Dhillon said the Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra should not be viewed merely as a political exercise, describing it as a “people’s movement” aimed at bringing the concerns of affected families into the public domain.
He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah had set a target of making the country drug-free by 2029.

Dhillon also said that if the BJP formed the government in Punjab, it would seek to eliminate the drug menace within two years.
He identified drugs, corruption, gangsterism, law and order, industry and employment as some of the major issues facing Punjab. He also stressed the need for rehabilitation of young people affected by drug abuse and support for families that had been devastated by addiction.
Questioning the law-and-order situation in the state, Dhillon said the alleged suppression of people’s voices was a matter of concern. He claimed that stronger action against drugs and organised crime was possible if there was political will.
Drawing a comparison with BJP-ruled states, he said the party’s governments in Uttar Pradesh had taken action against gangsterism, while previous governments in Madhya Pradesh had dealt with the Chambal dacoit problem. Punjab, he said, also required firm action against the drug menace.

Satya Devi of Tilak Nagar said:“Thank you for calling us here. Our homes have already been devastated, but I do not want anyone else’s home to suffer the same fate. We may go without food, but we want to be free from drugs. There is one sick person in my family, and I am afraid that another may also fall into addiction. I want the drug factories to be shut down so that other mothers do not have to go through what we have suffered.”

Pushpa said:“My son is addicted to drugs. I handed him over to the police because I wanted him to receive treatment. He is now admitted to a hospital in Amritsar and has also developed tuberculosis. There are only two of us at home. I do not want property or money. I only want my son to get well.”

Debo, a resident of Bilga village, said:“My son was addicted to drugs, and eventually the addiction took his life. There is nothing left for me now. My daughter-in-law also left the house. Drugs have destroyed my entire family.”

Gyan Kaur said:“My son was Ravi Kumar. Whatever we had built over the years, he gradually sold off. My husband was also addicted to alcohol and he too passed away. One of my sons now lives separately, and I have been left alone. I do not know where to go or what to do. Our family has been completely ruined. At least today, someone has raised our voice.”

Shama said:“My son Vansh is addicted to ‘chitta’. My husband is also an alcoholic and has never worked. Now my son too has fallen into addiction. Even those who want to give up drugs do not always get the help they need. I have approached the police and asked them to pay attention to the problem.

“We hear that drugs are also being sold by people living in big houses, but action is not taken against them. I work in people’s homes to make a living, while my son used to spend hundreds of rupees every day on drugs. I only want this menace to end.”

Chandigarh, September 28:Punjab BJP State General Secretary Anil Sareen has strongly condemned the unpleasant incidents that took place at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Jalandhar.

According to a press statement issued from the party office in Chandigarh, Anil Sareen held the Punjab Aam Aadmi Party government fully responsible for these incidents. He said that people who had come from outside, carrying weapons, entered the university premises and attempted to enter the girls’ hostels and misbehaved.

He questioned who these people were who vandalised and indulged in arson at the university in the presence of the police. He said that students studying at the university could never set fire to their own classrooms and laboratories.

Anil Sareen alleged that the level of the Punjab ‘AAP’ government had fallen so low that if one of its Rajya Sabha members, upset over the party’s policies and corruption, joins another political party, such politics is played against him.

Questioning the law-and-order situation in Punjab, Anil Sareen said that people who had come from outside were able to set the university on fire and leave, while the Punjab Police remained mere spectators. No steps were taken to ensure the safety of the students studying at the university, which is a matter of serious concern.

Anil Sareen demanded a high-level and impartial investigation into the matter and strict action against those responsible.
