CHANDIGARH.06.07.2024-Distinguished PGI alumnus Lt. Gen. Daljit Singh, D.M. (Neonatology), AVSM, VSM, PHS, DGAFMS & Sr. Col. Commandant AMC has very kindly consented to be the Chief Guest during the Foundation Day celebrations of PGIMER.

Lt. Gen. Daljit Singh, is the Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS). With a stellar career in Neonatology, he has been recognized for his exceptional service with awards like the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM). He holds the prestigious title of Senior Colonel Commandant of the Army Medical Corps (AMC). Known for his leadership and dedication, Lt. Gen. Singh has made significant contributions to military medicine. His expertise in Neonatology has greatly improved paediatric care in the armed forces.

With an MD degree in Paediatrics from Pune University, Dr Singh was commissioned into the Indian Air Force (IAF) on December 17, 1983.Additionally, he holds a doctor of medicine (MD) in neonatology from PGIMER Chandigarh and a Diplomate of National Board (DNB) in paediatrics from the National Board of Exams.

Lt. Gen. Daljit Singh will deliver an address on “PGI, AFMS and the Indian Nation” to the PGIMER fraternityat8.00am in Bhargava Auditorium on the Foundation Day i.e. 8thJuly,2024.

Conceived as a ‘National Centre of Excellence’ in 1961 with the concurrence of the Planning Commission, the Institute started functioning in 1962 and was formally inaugurated on July 7, 1963, by the then Prime Minister, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. Within a short period of 4 years, PGIMER was declared as an “Institute of National Importance” by an Act of Parliament on 1st April 1967 (Act 51 of 1966). The first batch of postgraduates was admitted in January 1963.

The Institute has 728 faculty members and around 1300 resident doctors (including sponsored/foreign national categories).

PGIMER has most efficiently fulfilled the responsibility to broaden the horizons of medical knowledge by intensive research in the field of healthcare and by extensive endeavours to persistently upgrade the standards of medical education. PGIMER offers 24 different postgraduate courses, 40 super-speciality courses and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) courses in all medical and non-medical disciplines along with 24 paramedical under and postgraduate courses.

With 2233 beds, PGIMER serves over 3 million outpatients and around 100,000 in-patients annually, with 160 specialties and super-specialty OPDs and numerous laboratory facilities catering to patients from all walks of life.

PGIMER continues to enhance patient services through initiatives like total computerization of OPD and IPD registration, online availability of lab reports, an online portal for hospital admissions, and upgrades to the PGI Poor Patient Cell. The institute features state-of-the-art technologies, including 384-slice dual source CT scan, advanced PET and CT facilities, advanced metabolic and genetic laboratories, and advanced vascular intervention laboratories, Kitten MRI machines etc.

As a beacon of medical professionalism, PGIMER remains a last resort for patients with serious and chronic illnesses, truly embodying as “Centre of Excellence” in healthcare.
