NEW DELHI - 16TH OCTOBER 2024-Fulfilling its promise, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has regularized 607 sanitation workers in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). During an event held at the Civic Centre on Wednesday, Chief Minister Atishi handed over the permanent job certificates to the sanitation workers. The event was attended by Mayor Shelly Oberoi, Deputy Mayor Aaley Mohammed Iqbal, and Leader of the House Mukesh Goyal.
Delhi CM Atishi highlighted that Lord Valmiki's teachings, especially his message of using the pen as a tool for empowerment, continue to inspire the Aam Aadmi Party’s government. She said, “Lord Valmiki’s pen teaches that no matter how left out someone is in society, they can rise through education and self-determination.”
CM Atishi emphasized that under Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership, the Delhi government has been fulfilling Lord Valmiki’s dream by providing world-class education to the poorest children for the past decade, transforming the lives of many underprivileged students.
She highlighted that before AAP came to power, only 50% of children in government schools completed their education. Many dropped out due to poor-quality education and ended up in small jobs, not due to choice, but because of the lack of opportunities. AAP’s transformation of Delhi government schools has led to those students receiving great higher education, becoming doctors and engineers.
The Chief Minister continued by connecting this vision with Baba Saheb Ambedkar’s principles of ‘Educate, Organize, and Struggle,’ noting that the AAP government is committed to fulfilling his vision too. "The AAP government has placed Baba Saheb Ambedkar’s image in every government office in Delhi and Punjab, showing our commitment to his ideals," she added.
CM Atishi went on to discuss the long-overdue regularization of sanitation workers, a promise the AAP government had made and has been working towards since AAP won the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). She said, “Arvind Kejriwal directed his team to prioritize the regularization of sanitation workers from the very first MCD meeting. His first directive to the Mayor was to get regularizations done. As of today, 607 more sanitation workers have been regularized, bringing the total to over 10,000 in the last two years alone.”
Reflecting on the past, Atishi acknowledged the struggles sanitation workers faced before the AAP took control of the MCD. Many workers had to fight to receive their monthly salaries, with payments being delayed for months. She shared, “The Arvind Kejriwal government had to lend funds to the MCD on several occasions to ensure salaries were paid. Now, under the AAP’s administration, salaries are being disbursed on time in the first week of every month.”
CM Atishi concluded by thanking the sanitation workers for their dedication, stating, "As the government stands by you, you have also stood by the people of Delhi, tirelessly working to keep the city clean. I promise that our government will continue to ensure your rights, benefits, and regular salaries. In return, I ask that you continue your commitment to keeping Delhi clean, as you always have."
While, Dr. Shelly Oberoi said, “On Valmiki Jayanti, Arvind Kejriwal has given you a significant gift from the Municipal Corporation. You’re part of our family, and your role in keeping Delhi clean is commendable. Whether during COVID, rains, or floods, you’ve worked tirelessly. Today, your long fight has been won.”
The Mayor stated that the promises made by Arvind Kejriwal are being fulfilled. Previously, sanitation workers had to fight for their salaries, but now they receive them in the first week of every month. She said, “we are moving in the direction of regularizing the workers, despite the Municipal Corporation’s budget constraints, to ensure they receive their rightful dues.”
