Chandigarh, August 2-Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party President Kewal Singh Dhillon launched a sharp attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, alleging that it has openly betrayed the mothers and sisters of Punjab.

Dhillon said that while the AAP government is putting on a show in the name of the "Satkar Yojana" to mislead women, it is simultaneously unleashing police brutality against women who are peacefully demanding their rightful benefits.

The BJP State President said that women MGNREGA workers protesting for their rights in Khanna were subjected to a lathi-charge. In Barnala, women sanitation workers were brutally assaulted, suffering head injuries and broken limbs. Similar incidents of violence against women were also reported in Sangrur. He said that the true face of a government claiming to uphold the dignity and respect of women has now been exposed.

Dhillon further said that before the Assembly elections, Arvind Kejriwal had guaranteed that every woman above the age of 18 would receive the benefits of the scheme without any conditions. However, after making women wait for four-and-a-half years, the government finally launched the scheme only after imposing one restrictive condition after another. Instead of paying the dues accumulated over the past four-and-a-half years, the government released benefits for only three months, which he described as an attempt to deceive the women of Punjab.

Kewal Singh Dhillon also alleged that the government has repeatedly changed the number of beneficiaries under the scheme. Initially, it claimed that 4 million women would benefit, then reduced the figure to 3.6 million, and has now brought it down to 3.2 million. He said that the government's own figures indicate that even today, more than 50 percent of eligible women have been left out of the scheme, exposing what he termed the government's dishonesty.

Dhillon said that the mothers and sisters of Punjab, along with the people of the state, are demanding accountability from the AAP government for five years of misgovernance and betrayal. He asserted that the people of Punjab would respond to the atrocities and violence against women by teaching the AAP government a lesson in the forthcoming elections.
