SHIMLA,7^th October, 2024-Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla said that the legacy of Wazir Ram Singh Pathania would always remain alive in our hearts and minds, who led the first organised armed revolt against British rule in India and inspired people to stand up against the British army.

He was speaking at the unveiling ceremony of the statue of great freedom fighter Wazir Ram Singh Pathania at Nurpur sub-division of Kangra district here today.

The Governor said that the name of Wazir Ram Singh Pathania was etched in history as a symbol of courage, patriotism and determination. “Today, we have gathered not only to pay tribute to this great man but also to revive his legacy, which remains an inspiration for generations,” said Shri Shukla.

He said that Wazir Ram Singh was more than just a brave warrior. Much before the 1857 revolt in the year 1848, he led the rebellion in the hilly areas and inspired the people to stand up against the British army. His battle at Shahpur was a testimony to his military prowess and relentless pursuit of freedom for his people. He shook the foundations of the British Empire with a handful of companions.

The Governor said that the British conspired and arrested Wazir Ram Singh Pathania and sentenced him to life imprisonment and sent him to Kalapani. Thereafter, he was sent to Rangoon and was subjected to a lot of atrocities. He attained martyrdom on 11 November, 1849 at the age of just 24 years.

“His sacrifices along-with his companion's are the cornerstone of our country's freedom struggle. They laid the foundation for subsequent movements, which ultimately led to India's independence”, said the Governor.

Shri Shukla said the statue would not only inspire us but would also stand as a testimony to the indomitable spirit of Wazir Ram Singh Pathania. His legacy will live on in our hearts and minds forever, and his story would continue to inspire many more to contribute to the progress and prosperity of our great nation.

Member of the All India Executive of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Indresh Kumar also spoke as the keynote speaker on the occasion.

Earlier, former Director General of the Indian Coast Guard Virendra Singh Pathania welcomed the Governor.

Member of Parliament Rajiv Bhardwaj and Indu Goswami, MLAs Ranveer Singh Nikka, Hansraj and Janak Raj, Chairman of Wazir Ram Singh Pathania Memorial Committee Vir Singh, former Ministers and other prominent people were also present on the occasion.
