CHANDIGARH, 06.03.25-The Department of Home Science at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, under the aegis of IQAC, organised 4th edition of Hastkala- the 7-day skill based workshop on fabric ornamentation. Dr Rati Arora (expert in clothing and textiles), Assistant Professor, Department of Home Science, was the resource person. During the workshop, various basic and innovative techniques of tie and dye, block printing, khaddi printing, fabric painting, wet painting and liquid embroidery were demonstrated by the resource person. On the last day of the workshop, the articles prepared by the participants were exhibited that featured an impressive collection of handcrafted items ranging from dupattas, kurtis, table runners, scarves, cushion covers, wall hangings, and bags. The exhibition highlighted a harmonious blend of ancient tie-dye techniques and painting methods on denims and jackets. Over 40 students from across the tricity actively participated in the workshop. The programme served as a learning opportunity for the broader community as the participants from other colleges, as well as students and a teacher from Ashiana Children Home, Panchkula, attended it. Cash prizes and certificates were awarded to the best created articles and all the participants, respectively.
Officiating Principal Ms. Suman Mahajan appreciated the efforts of the department to encourage and train the students towards development of their entrepreneurial skills in fabric ornamentation. Highlighting the importance of such skill development programmes, she said that skills are imperative to stand out in today’s competitive world.
