SANITATION WORKERS CALL OFF STRIKE AFTER ASSURANCE FROM CITY MAYOR HARPREET KAUR BABLA

Chandigarh, November 17:- The ongoing strike by the sanitation workers of Lions Services came to an end today following a decisive intervention and assurance from City Mayor Mrs. Harpreet Kaur Babla.

The Mayor convened a special meeting with the leaders of the striking workers along with senior officials of the Sanitation Department to address their long-pending issues. SanitationCommittee chairman Sh. Manoj Sonkar, Dr. Inderdeep Kaur, Medical Officer of Health, were also present during the discussions.

During the meeting, Mayor Babla listened to the concerns raised by the workers regarding delays in wages, pending arrears, and other service-related matters. Acknowledging the legitimacy of their grievances, she issued firm directions to the concerned officers to resolve all outstanding issues by the end of November 2025. She further assured the workers that all genuine demands would be addressed at the earliest to ensure their dignity, job security, and welfare.

Emphasizing the importance of timely compensation, the Mayor stated that no worker should have to wait for their rightful salary or arrears. She urged officials to streamline payment processes and ensure that wages are disbursed promptly every month. She expressed confidence that improved communication and proactive administrative steps would prevent such situations in the future.

The sanitation workers, satisfied with the assurances and timelines provided by the Mayor, agreed to call off their strike and resume duties immediately. The Municipal Corporation appreciated their cooperation and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the interests of frontline sanitation staff who play a crucial role in maintaining the city’s cleanliness and public health.

Mayor conducts comprehensive review of Daddumajra Legacy Waste site, orders acceleration of mining work and calls for Green Transformation

Chandigarh, November 17:- City Mayor Mrs. Harpreet Kaur Babla visited Daddumajra legacy waste dumping site today to take stock of the ongoing remediation and mining operations. She was accompanied by the chairman of sanitation committee, MCC Sh. Manoj Sonkar, Chief Engineer, Medical Officer of Health, and other senior officials from the concerned departments of MCC.

The visit aimed to assess the pace of work, ensure adherence to safety and environmental norms, and strengthen accountability within the project.

During the inspection, the Mayor expressed concern over the pending volume of waste yet to be processed. She firmly directed the teams to expedite the remaining phases of legacy waste mining and emphasized that the entire task must be completed within the stipulated timeframe. She reiterated that timely completion is crucial not only for improving sanitation standards but also for protecting public health and preventing long-term environmental damage.

The Mayor also issued instructions to begin planning for the aesthetic and ecological upliftment of the reclaimed land. She highlighted that once the waste is fully cleared, the site must be transformed through well-designed landscaping, plantation drives, and the creation of clean, green public spaces. “This area should emerge as a model of urban rejuvenation—a space that reflects the commitment to environmental preservation and responsible city planning,” she stated.

Emphasizing sustainability, the Mayor noted that the project must uphold the highest environmental standards at every stage. She appreciated the efforts of the teams working on the ground but urged them to maintain momentum and ensure quality outcomes.

The inspection concluded with a renewed commitment from all departments to work in coordination and deliver a cleaner, healthier, and greener Daddumajra for the citizens.

MC Chandigarh shamed offenders at Manimajra, fined and garbage thrown in public place returned at their doorstep

Chandigarh, November 17:- Acting on the directions of the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, a special cleanliness enforcement drive was launched today to curb littering in public spaces.

Citizens were encouraged to photograph individuals throwing waste in open areas and submit the location details through the Municipal Corporation app. After verification by the Area Inspector, challans were issued to the offenders. To motivate public participation, informants are being rewarded with ₹250 for every verified report.

As part of this campaign, today a unique awareness activity was carried out in Ward No. 5 (Mori Gate) and Ward No. 6 (Govindpura) of Mani Majra area. Accompanied by traditional dhol-nagara, officials visited the residences of individuals captured littering. Offenders were publicly confronted, handed back the garbage they had thrown, and issued challans of Rs. 13401 each on the spot. This impactful approach aimed to instill a sense of responsibility and embarrassment among habitual violators. Municipal Corporation Sanitary Inspector Davinder Rohilla led the enforcement proceedings at Manimajra area.

MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, appealed to residents to refrain from dumping waste in public places. He emphasized proper segregation and disposal of garbage only in designated Corporation-operated vehicles. He noted that the public is now vigilant and technologically empowered, actively uploading photographic evidence of violations on the MC app—ensuring strict penalties for offenders.

He urged to contribute wholeheartedly to making Chandigarh the cleanest city in the country. The drive saw active participation from general public and SafaiMitras of MCC, reinforcing the collective commitment toward a cleaner, greener city.
