Chandigarh, October 1: Reaffirming its commitment to promoting a clean environment and enhancing sanitation standards in the city, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC) organized a citywide Swachh Cloth Bag Langar Sewa as part of the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign. City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar, along with Area Councillor Sh. Dalip Sharma, and in the presence of Joint Commissioner Sh. Gurinder Singh Sodhi and MOH Dr. Inderdeep Kaur, distributed eco-friendly cloth bags crafted by Women Self-Help Groups at Sabzi Mandi, Sector 26.

This initiative involved the distribution of 5,000 cloth bags made from donated fabrics collected from communities, including Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), Market Welfare Associations (MWAs), schools, and offices at the permanent RRR center. The bags were distributed citywide by the Women SHGs, along with SBM Brand Ambassadors Sh. Praveen Duggal, area councillors, and MCC officials, to promote sustainable shopping practices and reduce reliance on single-use plastics.

The initiative also engaged Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in the mass stitching of these bags, demonstrating the powerful synergy between SBM 2.0 and DAY-NULM.

City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar stated, The distribution of these cloth bags reflects our commitment to a cleaner Chandigarh. Each bag represents a step toward reducing waste and promoting eco-friendly habits among the residents.

MC Commissioner Sh. Vinay Pratap Singh, IAS emphasized that this initiative is not just about distributing bags; it represents our collective effort to foster sustainability within our community. By supporting local SHGs, we empower the community while addressing environmental challenges.

A series of cleanliness drives have also been conducted, joined by area councillors and Joint Commissioner Sh. Gurinder Singh Sodhi, showcasing the collaborative efforts of the community in maintaining a clean and green city.

Notably, a Swachh Bharat Diwas will be celebrated on October 2 at Mahila Bhawan, alongside with a series of other events & activities
marking the 10th anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission, concluding the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign and paying tribute to the Father of the Nation on his 155th Gandhi Jayanti. The celebration will be graced by the Governor of Punjab and Administrator Chandigarh, Sh. Gulab Singh Kataria and other senior officials from Chandigarh Administration and MCC, alongside Safaimitras, Self-Help Groups, citizens, and other stakeholders.
