Chandigarh, March 10:Punjab’s Social Security, Women, and Child Development Minister, Dr. Baljit Kaur, stated that financial assistance has been provided to nearly 2.25 lakh children across the state.
Providing further details, Dr. Baljit Kaur informed that a total of ₹367.59 crore has been provided as financial assistance for 2.25 lakh destitute children in Punjab.
She further highlighted that the state government had allocated a budget of ₹377.00 crore for the welfare of destitute children during the current financial year, out of which ₹367.59 crore has already been utilized for their benefit.
Dr. Baljit Kaur emphasized that the government, under the leadership of Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, is continuously striving to transform Punjab into a prosperous state. The financial support provided for the holistic development and welfare of destitute children is a significant step in this direction.
She also urged the department officials to spread awareness about these schemes to ensure that a maximum number of children can avail the benefits of government initiatives.

YUDH NASHIAN VIRUDH: ILLEGAL STRUCTURE DEMOLISHED IN BARNALA
Chandigarh / Barnala, March 10Continuing its crackdown on drug smugglers under the ongoing anti-drug campaign 'Yudh Nashian Virudh’, initiated under the directives of Hon’ble Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Barnala Improvement Trust, with the assistance of Barnala Police, today demolished an illegally constructed structure located behind the Barnala Bus Stand.
A bulldozer was deployed to raze the house belonging to a mother-daughter duo, identified as Kali Kaur and her daughter Sarbo.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Barnala, Md. Sarfaraz Alam stated that, as per official records, Kali Kaur has 9 criminal cases registered against her, including 7 under the NDPS Act, while her daughter Sarbo faces 7 cases out of which 6 are under the NDPS Act.
The demolition was conducted following a request from the Barnala Improvement Trust, which sought police assistance to remove the illegal encroachment. SSP Barnala further emphasized that the action was carried out in an orderly manner, ensuring the presence of adequate police personnel to prevent any law-and-order disturbances.
The Barnala Police remains committed to taking stringent action against drug traffickers and criminals, in line with the government's vision of a drug-free Punjab, added SSP Barnala.

CHANDIGARH/TARN TARAN, March 10:In a major breakthrough amidst the ongoing anti-drugs campaign ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ launched on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Tarn Taran police has arrested Big Fish Shehnaz Singh, also known as Shawn Bhinder, an Indian-origin International drug lord wanted by the USA-based intelligence and security agency Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Monday.
The arrested accused Shawn Bhinder, a native of village Mandiala in Batala and had been residing in Brampton in Canada, was wanted by the FBI in one of the largest drug seizures in the USA on February 26, 2025, wherein, the FBI had arrested six of his associates in the US and seized 391 kg methamphetamine, 109 kg cocaine, four sophisticated weapons and vehicles from their possession. The six accused previously arrested by the FBI have been identified as Amritpal Singh alias Amrit alias Bal, Amritpal Singh alias Cheema, Taqdeer Singh alias Romi, Sarabjit Singh Saabi, Fernando Valladares alias Franco and Gurlal Singh.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said that accused Shawn Bhinder was a key player in a global narcotics syndicate, smuggling cocaine from Colombia into the USA and Canada.
After the crackdown by the FBI, accused Shawn Bhinder managed to give a slip to the FBI sleuths and clandestinely landed in India, he said, while adding that, the Punjab Police has successfully tracked and arrested him from the jurisdiction of Ludhiana.
The DGP said that the arrested accused was also wanted in an Arms Act case registered in December 2024, wherein Tarn Taran Police had arrested five members of the notorious Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and Amritpal Batth Gang leading to recovery of significant cache of arms and ammunition from their possession.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ferozepur Range Swapan Sharma accompanied by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tarn Taran Abhimanyu Rana, while addressing a press conference said that preliminary investigations reveal that accused Shawn Bhinder played a key role in transporting large consignments of drugs across international borders using trucks and trailers.
He said that it was found during interrogation that accused Shawn Bhinder, operating under the guise of a legitimate transportation business in Canada since 2014, allegedly facilitated the movement of drugs from Colombia to the US and Canada via Mexico. Probe has also revealed that Shawn Bhinder along with his accomplices were transporting approximately 600 kgs of cocaine from Colombia every week, he added.
SSP Abhimanyu Rana said that arrested accused’s network is believed to have ties with notorious drug traffickers, including Amritpal Singh alias Baath and Gurjant Singh Bholu Havelia. Further investigations are on, he added.
Meanwhile, over the past four months, the Tarn Taran police has registered 125 cases under the NDPS Act, arresting 145 individuals and recovering 34 kg heroin, 4 kg opium and ₹2.29 lakh drug money. Additionally, 29 proclaimed offenders in the cases of NDPS Act have been apprehended during this period.

Punjab Introduces High-Yield Maize Hybrid PMH 17 to Boost Farmers’ Income & Conserve Water Resources

Chandigarh, March 10:In a significant move to conserve groundwater and provide farmers with a profitable alternative to water-guzzling paddy crop, Punjab is all set to introduce a new high-yield maize hybrid, PMH 17. This dual-purpose hybrid is suitable for both grain and silage production.
Disclosing this here today, Punjab Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian said that this hybrid variety can be sown between the last week of May and the end of June, with a maturity period of 96 days. This specific planting window and short maturity time could be beneficial for farmers, potentially allowing for multiple harvests in a single growing season.
The Director of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare department Mr. Jaswant Singh, who is also the Chairman of the State varietal approval committee for field crops said that the PMH 17 is a promising new maize hybrid for Punjab's farmers. It's well-suited for ethanol production due to high in starch content, and has an average yield of 25 quintals per acre, and it is moderately resistance to common pests like fall armyworms and Maydis leaf blight. The hybrid also features tall plants with broad, erect leaves, semi-open tassels, and long, medium-placed ears with flint, yellow-orange capped grains, indicating a robust and productive plant.
Recognising the new hybrid of Maize’s potential for high yields, ethanol production, and disease resistance, the Agriculture Minister Khudian said that it would be a value addition to Punjab's agricultural landscape. He also directed the department officials to ensure the seeds timely and widespread distribution among farmers from the next season to facilitate the adoption of this new hybrid variety, allowing farmers to benefit from its advantages and contribute to the state's agricultural growth.

Sunanda Sharma Case : Pushpinder Dhaliwal Arrested After Intervention of Punjab State Women Commission

Chandigarh, March 10:Following the strong intervention of the Punjab State Women Commission, Punjab Police have arrested music producer Pushpinder Dhaliwal, also known as Pinky Dhaliwal, in the case filed by renowned singer and actress Sunanda Sharma. The Women Commission took suo motu cognizance of the matter after Sunanda Sharma’s public plea and directed Punjab Police Headquarters to submit an action-taken report.
Exercising its powers under Section 12 of the Punjab State Women Commission Act, 2001, the Commission had instructed an SP-rank officer to investigate the allegations and take appropriate action. In response to this directive, the police arrested Dhaliwal from Mohali.
Sunanda Sharma has alleged that Dhaliwal financially exploited her by withholding payments despite her songs generating ₹250 crore in revenue. She further accused him of wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation and forgery. Taking strict action on the Women Commission’s intervention, police have registered a case and initiated further legal proceedings.
Gill said that Punjab State Women Commission remains committed to ensuring justice and will continue to pursue all necessary legal actions to protect women’s rights and dignity. She urged all women facing harassment to seek support from the Commission without fear.

CHANDIGARH/AMRITSAR, March 10: In a major breakthrough amidst the ongoing anti-drugs campaign ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ launched on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Commissionerate Police Amritsar has dismantled a drug trafficking cartel with the arrest of four drug smugglers, including a 16-years-old juvenile, and seized 4.01 kg heroin, Rs 20,000 drug money and three motorcycles from their possession, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Monday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Tarsem Singh alias Sema (23), Amrit Singh alias Abhi (21), both residents of Jalalabad, Fazilka; Ramanjit Singh alias Raman (19), a resident of Tarn Taran; and a juvenile from Ferozepur.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said that the arrested individuals were in constant contact with Pakistan-based smugglers, who were using Ferozepur sector to push in drugs across the border and providing precise coordinates for the drops. “The juvenile, whose identity has been withheld due to his age, played a critical role in the operation by using boats to cross the Sutlej River to retrieve drug consignments, dropped by Pakistani smugglers, from areas near the international border fencing,” he said.
The DGP said that two separate FIRs have been registered under NDPS Act in this regard and further investigations are ongoing to establish backward and forward in both the cases. More arrests and recoveries are likely in coming days, he added.
Sharing more details, Commissioner of Police (CP) Amritsar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that acting on reliable information, police teams led by DCP Harpreet Singh Mander, ADCP Investigation Navjot Singh, and ACP Detective Harminder Singh, under the supervision of CIA Staff-1 in-charge Inspector Amolkdeep Singh and CIA Staff-2 in-charge Sub Inspector Ravi Kumar conducted a targeted deferent operations and apprehended the accused persons from areas of Chheharta and Cantonment.

Chandigarh, March 10:In a groundbreaking move towards animal welfare, the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann led Punjab Government has announced a statewide initiative to provide free tetanus toxoid vaccination for all equines— horses, donkeys and mules.
Announcing this here today, S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian, Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries, informed that the Animal Husbandry department will soon launch a drive to administer tetanus toxoid vaccine to all horses, donkeys, and mules, while directing the department officials to make all the necessary arrangements to roll out the drive for safeguarding the health and well-being of equines.
The Cabinet Minister was addressing a seminar on “Care & Cure of Domestic Animals with Recent Advances in Diagnosis” organised under the ASCAD scheme by the Animal Husbandry department at Kisan Bhawan here.
Emphasising the importance of a collaborative effort between veterinary doctors and farmers, S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian said that the veterinary doctors should play a proactive role in educating and assisting farmers in maximising the benefits of the department's programs. By bridging the gap between technical expertise and practical application, the department would empower farmers to achieve greater success in their agricultural allied endeavours.
During the seminar, experts from Guru Nanak Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana highlighted the latest advancements in the treatment of Repeat Breeding in Large Animals, Management of Colic in equines, advancements in diagnosis of parasitic diseases in livestock and management of snake bite.
During the seminar, Director Animal Husbandry Dr. GS Bedi told that the topics were totally field oriented and all the veterinarians discussed in details about it. The new advances will be helpful in increasing the milk production, in decreasing the stray animal population and will be helpful in the welfare of all the animals. Dr. Mrigank Honparkhe, Dr. Gurpreet Singh, Dr. Shushma Chhabra, and Dr. Parvinder Kaur Lubana, shared their insights and perspectives on these topics.
The CP said that efforts are being made to uncover the entire network of suppliers, dealers, and buyers, as well as to ascertain the total quantity of drugs purchased by the arrested individuals so far.
In this regard, two separate cases, including FIR No. 40 dated February 4, 2025, under sections 21(c), 23, and 29 of the NDPS Act at Chheharta Police Station, Amritsar and FIR No.29 dated February 7,2025 under sections 21(c) and 27-A of the NDPS Act at Cantonment Police Station, Amritsar, have been registered.

-Vigilance Bureau arrests ASI for taking Rs 3,500 bribe, Demanded Rs 10,000 more to file chargesheet
Chandigarh, March 10 – The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), during its ongoing drive against corruption in the state, has arrested Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Kulwinder Singh, posted at Police Station City, Kapurthala, for accepting a bribe of Rs 3,500 and demanding an additional Rs 10,000.
Disclosing this here today, an official spokesperson of the VB stated that the said police official was arrested following an online complaint lodged by a resident of Kapurthala on the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line.
The spokesperson further added that the complainant had informed the VB that he had got registered a police case at the said police station. ASI Kulwinder Singh, the investigating officer in the case, had demanded a bribe in exchange for submitting the chargesheet in the court. The accused had also contacted the complainant via mobile phone, instructing him to pay the amount to proceed with the chargesheet submission.
During the investigation, the allegations were substantiated, confirming that the ASI had already taken Rs 3,500 and was demanding an additional Rs 10,000. Following this, he was arrested and a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against him at the VB Police Station, Jalandhar Range. Further investigation into the case is underway, he added.

HARJOT BAINS ORDERS DEOs TO SPEND TWO HOURS IN FIELD TO IMPROVE SCHOOLS’ EFFICACY

Chandigarh, March 10:To further improve efficacy of the state government schools to ensure the world-class standard education, Punjab School Education Minister S. Harjot Singh Bains, on Monday, ordered all the District Education Officers (DEOs- Elementary & Secondary) to spend first two hours— 9am to 11am— in the field everyday, besides, asking them to prepare data-driven district-specific action plans with measurable outcomes. He said that outcome of all the DEOs will be reviewed on a monthly basis.
These directions were issued during a full-day marathon review meeting with the DEOs held at MGSIPA here. The Education Minister also asked them to ensure on-ground implementation of programs regarding the Schools of Eminence (SOEs), enrolment drive and student coaching launched by the state government.
To assess the progress in fulfilling promises and achieving targets in the education sector, which has been accorded top priority status by the Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann led Punjab Government, S. Harjot Singh Bains stated that education is the cornerstone of Punjab's future and that the government is committed to transforming the state's education system.
The Education Minister directed all the DEOs to expedite the development of Schools of Eminence (SOEs) with immediate focus on infrastructure completion, increasing enrolment figures and filling vacant staff positions and strengthening student coaching programs for competitive examinations like JEE, with regular assessment of performance outcomes and necessary interventions.
While asking to accelerate implementation of Mission Samrath with clear targets for improving Foundational Literacy and Numeracy at the district level, especially for students in Grades 3-8, S. Harjot Singh Bains also directed officials to ensure provision of minimum infrastructure standards in all the schools with priority given to functional and separate toilets for girl and boy students, safe drinking water facilities, dual desks and boundary walls.
The Education Minister categorically asked officials to launch an intensive enrolment drive to increase admissions at Primary, Upper Primary, Secondary and Senior Secondary levels with targeted outreach programs. He said that all the pending infrastructure works under NABARD and Samagra Shiksha will be completed within stipulated timelines and resolve all bottlenecks immediately.
S. Harjot Singh Bains reiterated that education remains the government's top priority and that all necessary resources will be mobilized to achieve the targets set for the sector.
Secretary School Education Ms. Anindita Mitra, Director General School Education Mr. Vinay Bublani, Special Secretary Mr. Rajesh Dhiman and other senior officials of the department were also present during the meeting.

CHANDIGARH, March 10:Continuing the war against drugs “Yudh Nashian Virudh” waged by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to eradicate drug menace from state consecutively for the 10th day, Punjab Police conducted raids at 538 locations on Monday leading to the arrest of 112 drug smugglers after registration of 68 first information reports (FIRs) across the state. With this, the number of total drug smugglers arrested has reached to 1436 in just 10 days.
The raids have resulted in recovery of 1.8 kg heroin, 200 grams opium, 15 kg poppy husk, 3874 intoxicant tablets/pills/injections and Rs 1.2 lakh drug money from the possession of arrested drug smugglers.
The operation was conducted on the directions of Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav simultaneously in all 28 Police districts of the state.
Notably, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has asked the Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendent of Police to make Punjab drug free state in three months. The Punjab government has also constituted a 5-member Cabinet Sub Committee led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema to monitor the war against drugs.
Divulging details, Special DGP Law and Order Arpit Shukla informed that over 220 Police teams, comprising over 1600 police personnel, under the supervision of 103 gazetted officers have conducted raids across the state and checked as many as 610 suspicious persons during the day long operation.
The Special DGP said that with the state government has enforced a three-pronged strategy— Enforcement, Deaddiction and Prevention (EDP)— to eradicate drugs from the state, the Punjab Police as part of ‘De-addiction’ has convinced two persons to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment, while, organised 135 awareness events across the state as part of Prevention.
